Originally from India, the hookah has gained immense popularity, especially in the middle east. A hookah operates by water filtration and indirect heat. It can be used for smoking herbal fruits or flavoured tobacco.
The jar at the bottom of the hookah is filled with water sufficient to submerge a few centimeters of the body tube, which is sealed tightly to it. Tobacco (or herbal tobacco) is placed inside the bowl at the top of the hookah and a burning charcoal is placed on top of the tobacco. Some cultures cover the bowl with perforated tin foil to separate the coal and the tobacco, which minimizes inhalation of coal ash with the smoke. Be sure to poke a few holes in the tin foil to ensure hot air can travel through to the tobacco.
When one inhales via the hose, air is pulled through the coal and into the bowl. The air, hot from the charcoal, roasts the tobacco, producing smoke. This smoke passes down through the body tube, which extends into the water in the jar. It bubbles up through the water and fills the top part of the jar, to which the hose is attached.
When a smoker inhales from the hose, smoke passes into the lungs, and the change in pressure in the jar pulls more air through the charcoal, continuing the process.
Certain methods are also applied to enhance the experience of hookah smoking, such as putting ice in the water or chilling of the hoses. To develop a special flavor, customers as well as the manufacturers mix tobacco with other flavors. Addition of fruit juice or wine in the water leads to enhance the flavor of hookah smoke.
Charcoal used in the Hookah should be appropriate, as there are certain harmful charcoal briquettes that can lead to intake of carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas. Make sure you purchase charcoal made specifically for Hookahs.
You should take a little quantity of Hookah tobacco in the bowl. Some people add more tobacco to improve the flavor of Hookah, but it is a wrong notion. If there is not enough flavour coming through, it is because the coal is not properly heated.
